Free Chair Yoga Through Medicare: SilverSneakers and Plan Benefits Explained
Who gets SilverSneakers and similar fitness benefits free through Medicare, how to check your plan, what changed for 2026, what to ask during open enrollment, and free options if you don't qualify.
Original Medicare doesn't pay for chair yoga or gym classes. But many Medicare Advantage plans, and some Medicare supplement plans, include a fitness benefit such as SilverSneakers, Renew Active or Silver&Fit at no extra cost. If your plan has one, you can often take chair yoga classes at participating locations or online for free. Here's how to check, what changed for 2026, and what to do if you don't qualify.
Which Medicare plans include fitness benefits?
| Coverage | Fitness benefit? |
|---|---|
| Original Medicare (Parts A and B) | No; gym memberships and fitness classes aren't covered |
| Medicare Advantage (Part C) | Often yes; many plans include SilverSneakers, Renew Active, Silver&Fit or their own program |
| Medicare supplement (Medigap) | Sometimes; some insurers add a fitness program |
| Employer or union retiree plans | Sometimes; check with your plan |
The programs usually include access to participating gyms and community centers, in-person classes such as chair yoga, and live or on-demand online classes you can do at home.
How to check your plan in five minutes
- Look at your plan's "Evidence of Coverage" or benefits summary for the words fitness, gym, SilverSneakers, Renew Active or Silver&Fit.
- Use the program's eligibility checker. SilverSneakers has one on its website; you'll need your name, date of birth and ZIP code.
- Call the number on your plan card and ask: "Does my plan include a fitness benefit, and which locations or online classes can I use?"
- Find classes near you. Ask specifically about chair yoga, gentle yoga or "Yoga Stretch" style classes.
- Try an online class if there's no location nearby; online options are especially useful in rural areas.
What changed for 2026
Fitness benefits aren't guaranteed from year to year. For 2026, a KFF analysis reported that a slightly smaller share of Medicare Advantage plans offered a fitness benefit than in 2025, and some plans narrowed their gym networks; for example, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota changed which fitness centers its Medicare Advantage members could use with SilverSneakers. If you use a specific gym or class, confirm it's still included for next year.
Open enrollment: questions to ask
Medicare's annual open enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, with changes starting January 1. If fitness classes matter to you, ask these when comparing plans:
- Does the plan include a fitness benefit, and which program?
- Is my current gym or senior center in the network?
- Are chair or gentle yoga classes offered nearby or online?
- Are there any costs, limits or sign-up steps?
- Will I still see my doctors and get my medicines covered? Fitness perks shouldn't outweigh the basics.

Free chair yoga if you don't qualify
- Senior centers and Area Agencies on Aging often run free or low-cost chair yoga. Find yours through the Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116).
- Public libraries, parks departments and county extension offices sometimes host free classes.
- YMCAs offer classes for older adults, and many have financial assistance.
- At home, free: our printable four-week chair yoga program and free 28-day plan.
Common questions
Is SilverSneakers really free?
If your plan includes it, the membership itself usually costs nothing extra. You still pay your plan's regular premium, and some locations charge for extras outside the program.
Can I use it at any gym?
Only participating locations, and networks vary by plan and area. Check the program's location finder.
I'm under 65 but on Medicare because of a disability. Can I use it?
Often yes, if your plan includes the benefit. Check with your plan or the program's eligibility tool.
Are online classes as good as in person?
They're a great option if you can't travel. In-person classes add social contact and a teacher who can see your form, which many people value.
